Archer claimed the first Melbourne Cup in 1861 that and the same race the subsequent year by a record margin of eight lengths (later matched by Rain Lover). The horse would have competed again in 1863, but the trainer’s telegraphed acceptance form arrived late and Archer was scratched on a technicality.
